Her Perfect Life by Hank Phillippi Ryan

Thank you to NetGalley, Hank Phillippi Ryan, and ForgeBooks for my ARC of Her Perfect Life.

I am a fan of Hank Phillippi Ryan. I had the pleasure of reading The Murder List and fell in love with her style of writing! When I had the change for an ARC of Her Perfect Life, I just couldn’t resist.

The Story

The next thrilling standalone novel by USA Today bestselling author Hank Phillippi Ryan.

Everyone knows Lily Atwood—and that may be her biggest problem. The beloved television reporter has it all—fame, fortune, Emmys, an adorable seven-year-old daughter, and the hashtag her loving fans created: #PerfectLily. To keep it, all she has to do is protect one life-changing secret.

Her own.

Lily has an anonymous source who feeds her story tips—but suddenly, the source begins telling Lily inside information about her own life. How does he—or she—know the truth?

Lily understands that no one reveals a secret unless they have a reason. Now she’s terrified someone is determined to destroy her world—and with it, everyone and everything she holds dear.

How much will she risk to keep her perfect life?

My Thoughts

I was very disappointed by Her Perfect Life. I may have hyped it up too much, but it was a tremendous letdown.

I’ve noticed a recent pattern where I need books and storylines to be believable. Unless it’s a fantasy book, and there is magic or something just truly fantastical. However, this book just didn’t feel believable. It was one of those things were everything was just a little too easy that it felt inexpertly written. I think she should stick with court-style books.

The entire synopsis is about Lily and Lily’s life and Lily’s story, but the book itself is told from three different perspectives/people. One of which, Greer, Lily’s assistant or partner or whatever you want to call her, feels extremely unnecessary to the entire storyline. She honestly served little to no purpose. If we had removed her perspective (and overwhelming, whiney resentment), we wouldn’t have lost anything in the story.

Lily’s secrets dealt with a baby daddy and her missing sister. The baby daddy half of it was also unnecessary. Or the missing sister half was unnecessary. One or the other. It was competing story lines where neither of which were developed well and left me with a lackluster feeling.

Her Perfect Life publishes September 14, 2021!
