Never Tell by Lisa Gardner

Lisa Gardner does it again! After Right Behind You and Find Her, I was hooked, but Never Tell just solidified my love of Lisa Gardner. Seriously. I must have all of her books. If you’re looking for a gift idea for me, figure out what Lisa Gardner books I don’t own and get me one of them.

The Story

A man is dead, shot three times in his home office. But his computer has been shot twelve times, and when the cops arrive, his pregnant wife is holding the gun.

D.D. Warren arrives on the scene and recognizes the woman–Evie Carter–from a case many years back. Evie’s father was killed in a shooting that was ruled an accident. But for D.D., two coincidental murders is too many.

Flora Dane sees the murder of Conrad Carter on the TV news and immediately knows his face. She remembers a night when she was still a victim–a hostage–and her captor knew this man. Overcome with guilt that she never tracked him down, Flora is now determined to learn the truth of Conrad’s murder.

But D.D. and Flora are about to discover that in this case the truth is a devilishly elusive thing. As layer by layer they peel away the half-truths and outright lies, they wonder: How many secrets can one family have?

My Thoughts

As a reminder, the D.D. Warren books are considered a series, but I’ve read them super out of order. I would consider them like that Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot novels. D.D. Warren is a consistent character and there are some allusions to past books, but you don’t miss out on anything if you haven’t read the immediately preceding book.

Flora Dane comes back in Never Tell too! We met her in Find Her and learned of her history with her captor, Jacob Ness. It turns out that she is now a CI for D.D. and noticed the dead man as someone she had met while in captivity.

The way the pieces in this novel come together is just great. I’ve said it a million times, but it’s like your favorite crime show in book form! And the end? Like watching one of those cops shows where you’re chasing the perpetrator live!

Do yourself a favor and read whatever Lisa Gardner books you can get your hands on.
