Lists, Reading Round Ups

Down the Book Jar’s Greatest Love Stories

In honor of the impending Valentine’s Day, I am rounding up my favorite love stories. Now, I do not often enjoy love stories. It’s not really my go-to genre. Maybe, when I find a love of my own, I might feel differently. However, romances tend to drag on, and they’re so predictable.

If you feel similarly, then these love stories are for you! They’ll make you cry and warm your heart, but they’re not too over the top. I actually gave these to a girlfriend of mine at her bridal brunch as a fun gift (she isn’t registered anywhere yet).

PS, I Love You by Cecelia Ahern

I fell in love with PS, I Love You when I saw the movie. My sister made me watch it. I was in my teens, and far too young to truly understand the significance of it all. However, I still cried like a baby. The book is significantly different than the movie, but the essence is still there. I cried less when reading the book, but the tears were still definitely there. It’s just a beautiful and unfortunate love story, and I can’t recommend reading it enough.

My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares

Another tragically beautiful love story. My Name is Memory follows a couple in love. Daniel remembers every time he has loved Sophia, but she forgets in every lifetime. They keep coming back to each other time and time again, but struggle to figure out how they can truly spend a lifetime together. Now, Ann Brashares also wrote The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants so you know that this one will tug at your heartstrings. It’s been a while since I read it, but it’s on my list to re-read this year.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I fought liking Outlander. I really did not want to like it. The concept of her falling in love with another man so quickly after being parted from her husband (who she also really loved) just doesn’t seem like it would be a good love story. However, I think anyone in the world would want to be loved the way Jamie loves Claire. I have not made it much further into the series. Should I?

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Get ready to ugly cry. I loaned The Fault in Our Stars to a past boss and did not give her this warning. She made the mistake of reading it in public. I mean, talk about a tragic love story. I own the movie but have never watched it because of how sad I know it to be. However, it’s young love which is true…before life gets complicated.

The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adriana Trigiani

There are so many different layers of love in The Shoemaker’s Wife. The love of parents for their children, the love of a couple, the love of family… I mean, what a journey. My words for this book are few, but I loved it so much. I’ve either purchased copies for everyone I know or forced them to read it. Adriana Trigiani is a master.

Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with a loved one or getting the girls together for a fun night, I hope you have a nice holiday. Eat some chocolate, drink some wine, and curl up with a good book.
