Books with Irresistible Plot Twists
I love a good plot twist. Like, need it in my soul love it.
When I read a book that my mom would lovingly describe as “just a nice story,” I still find myself trying to solve a mystery or manufacture conflict where none exists. It’s not that those stories are bad — it’s just that my brain is constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. When it doesn’t, I end up a little disappointed.
Which is why I always come back to books with irresistible plot twists.
I posted a reel on my Instagram, sharing my favorite thrillers. I affectionately called it “My Favorite WTF Just Happened Books”. Reels can be so limiting, and I have so many more favorites, so we’re here.
These are the books that made my jaw drop, forced me to reread entire chapters, and immediately had me texting friends like, “PLEASE read this so I can talk about it.”
Books with Irresistible Plot Twists
AKA My Favorite WTF Just Happened Books
None of This is True by Lisa Jewell
This is one of those books that I finished and immediately needed to hand to someone else so I could talk about it. None of This Is True absolutely knocked me off my feet.
I genuinely feel like I can’t say much about it without giving something away, which is always the mark of a great thriller. Just trust me when I say this book will mess with your head in the best possible way.
Honestly, you could read anything by Lisa Jewell and love it. Another of hers that I love is The Family Upstairs (great if you like cults).
The Good Girl by Mary Kubica
I read this book for the first time shortly after a breakup. The guy I was dating wasn’t a reader, and I had quietly given that part of myself up for a while.
The Good Girl is the book that made me fall back in love with reading.
I absolutely devoured it. . .and then promptly bought copies for friends and family so I’d have people to talk to about it. This book is emotional, unsettling, and incredibly compelling, with a twist that sticks with you long after you finish.
Don’t Open Your Eyes by Liv Constantine
The ending of this one completely surprised me. The pacing is tight, the tension builds steadily, and I found myself unable to put it down.
This is an excellent vacation read. The kind of thriller you bring to the pool and suddenly realize you’ve been reading for hours (just make sure you’re in the shade or remember to put on sunscreen!).
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
If you’ve been living under a rock, you might not know that Where the Crawdads Sing is a WTF kind of book. (Spoiler alert: Read the poetry!) The movie does the book a fair bit of justice, but we all know the book is always better.
Defending Jacob by William Landay

This book genuinely shocked me.
It was the first audiobook I ever started and finished, which meant I couldn’t flip ahead and spoil the ending for myself (a blessing and a curse). I listened to it while driving across the country, and my jaw literally dropped when I reached the end.
Since then, I’ve made my mom read it. I made my book club read it. I even forced my dad to read it. It’s that good.
In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware
I’ve read nearly everything Ruth Ware has ever written, but In a Dark, Dark Wood holds a special place in my heart.
I picked it up on a whim at the San Diego airport because I was worried I’d finish my other book on the flight home. It was worth every single inflated airport dollar. Atmospheric, tense, and unsettling in a way Ruth Ware does so well.
When You See Me by Lisa Gardner
A friend of mine told me I had to get When You See Me when she saw me raving about my love for Lisa Gardner. (FTR, she can do no wrong. Read all of her books if you can.) It knocked my socks off. I could not put it down, and I read it in just a few days.
Lisa Gardner is another author that you can pick up any of her books and enjoy. I’m a big fan of her newest Frankie Elkin series, especially One Step Too Far.
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
If you’re choosing between Michaelides’ books, choose The Silent Patient. Full stop.
His other novels were major letdowns for me, but this one delivers. The plot twist keeps you engaged all the way through and lands in a way that makes the entire story snap into place at the end.
Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins

Another total surprise hit.
I received Reckless Girls as an ARC from NetGalley and went in with low expectations. Instead, I became completely obsessed. I could not put my Kindle down, and I’ve recommended it to more people than I can count.
Yes, there are some unrealistic elements, but if you can suspend disbelief just a little, this book will absolutely make your jaw drop.
Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman
This is a WTF book for a very different reason.
I don’t even remember how Full Tilt ended up on my shelf, but it’s one of my favorites purely because of how creative it is. The WTF moment comes fairly early, and while it’s not a traditional thriller, it will knock your socks off conceptually.
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
This was a random library pickup and wow.
I had heard great things about Alice Feeney but hadn’t read anything by her yet. Rock Paper Scissors was SO good. I didn’t see the twist coming at all, and the final reveal was genuinely chilling.
Minor spoiler warning for sensitive readers: a dog is abducted, but the dog is not harmed.
I’ve since read other Alice Feeney books. I can absolutely recommend Sometimes I Lie (her debut!), but vehemently encourage you to avoid His & Hers.
The Safe Place by Anna Downes
Another ARC win.
While many great thrillers take place in London, The Safe Place is set in the south of France — and the setting is stunning. A secluded estate, a mysterious job, and an offer that feels too good to be true.
I suspected something was coming, but not in the way it unfolded. A perfect vacation thriller.
The Better Liar by Tanen Jones
If it’s possible for a book to smack you in the face, The Better Liar definitely smacked me in the face. This book was another with a plot twist right at the very end. You think that you know exactly where the story is going to lead you, and then it’s just WHAM. Plot twist.
When She Returned by Lucinda Berry
I am endlessly fascinated by cults (not a spoiler), and Lucinda Berry handles this topic brilliantly.
The back-and-forth between present day and flashbacks makes you feel like you’re living alongside the characters. The ending? Absolutely baffling.
I feel repetitive saying that Lucinda Berry is yet another author who can do no wrong. My new favorite (well, second favorite) of hers? Keep Your Friends Close. Worth every freaking word.
Thirteen by Steve Cavanaugh
This is technically a book in the middle of a series (more of a recurring character than a must-read-start-to-finish series). Besides a few mentions of previous events, I don’t think I felt that I had a hard time understanding the story. Thirteen is a bit of a different thriller in the sense that it’s more of a criminal procedural book (like Defending Jacob). I’d say this is one of the better books for men (though none of the others are “girly”).
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
We were a house divided on who preferred The Woman in the Window versus The Couple Next Door. You would think that you know where the plot twist is coming from the title of the book, but you do not! I started reading this in my early days of discovering thrillers, and it was amazing.
The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth
This book has a plot twist IN THE VERY LAST CHAPTER. The last few pages. Seriously, it knocked me off my feet. I try and read everything that Sally Hepworth has written, and The Mother-in-Law has been my favorite.
A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham
It takes a lot to surprise me in a good thriller, and Willingham got me! There were some breadcrumbs you thought were leading you in the right direction, and then she just smacked you in the literary face. Can’t wait to read more from her!
I’ve now read all of her books, and I would add Forget Me Not to this list as well! Stacy Willingham does really good southern thrillers.
Kill for Me, Kill for You by Steve Cavanagh
Yes, another Steve Cavanagh book! I read this back-to-back with None of This is True (such a good reading week!), and it blew me away in a completely different way. There were so many layers to the twists in this book. It felt like they just kept coming!
Why I Love Books Like This
I genuinely believe books with irresistible plot twists are the gateway drug to becoming a reader.
Every book on this list will keep you engaged. None rely on graphic content for shock value. They’re the kind of books that keep you up too late, whispering “just one more chapter” until suddenly it’s 2 a.m.
And honestly? That’s the best kind of reading experience there is.

You MUST try the caraval series by Stephanie Garber. The entire book is about games and not trusting anything or anyone and it’s full of plot twists. My jaw hit the floor when i finished it . It’s dark academia , magical and solving misteries kind of thing. (sorry , english is not my first language) TRUST ME
I really enjoyed The Art of the Twist by M.H. Nana. It’s a collection of short stories, and many end with a twist!
