Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney

I feel like I’m still trying to catch up on Alice Feeney books. I believe I have discovered her “late” and so I’m trying to read all of hers that I can. Turns out Sometimes I Lie was her first novel, so I brought it back to the beginning.

The Story

My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth?

My Thoughts

It is not even remotely fair that this was Alice Feeney’s debut novel. She hit the ground running with Sometimes I Lie, and I am absolutely blown away.

I feel like there were MULTIPLE twists that kept you guessing in the best way. Sometimes, twists are predictable or so out of left field that it doesn’t even make sense. This book WORKED! There were some parts that were harder to read if you’re a bit squeamish, but it wasn’t terribly gory.

I appreciated the switching between different timelines and the inclusion of the diaries. It helped create a more robust story while also keeping it moving quickly.

While Rock Paper Scissors is still my favorite Alice Feeney novel, Sometimes I Lie is a close second. If you’re looking for a quick read on a plane or by the beach, you’d be good with any of her novels. Except for His & Hers. I will forever tell EVERYONE not to read it. Wildly uncomfortable.
